CHAPTER SIX
Afternoon sunshine streamed through the kitchen window of Fox Cottage, illuminating the greenhouse outside with buttery warmth that would serve her plants well. Rosie washed and stacked dishes with methodical precision, giving her mind permission to wander as a chance to unwind after what had been a hectic day. They had a sleigh, but it was just one piece of a much larger puzzle. They still had to sort out the list and the gifts, and time was fading fast.
An appeal might have worked, if there hadnât been evidence that Christmas spirit was fading the whole town over. Ben had noted the lack of people at the market, and she had seen for herself how few presents had been donated there. She washed and dried and thought about the dilemma, but it wasnât until the last dish had been put away that Rosie noticed something rather peculiar.
The entire kitchen was filled with tiny red and green sparkles, like glowing dust-bunnies that seemed to eddy and flow through the air entirely of their own accord. She frowned and blinked as she turned to look, noticing the dull light of twilight had encroached into the kitchen itself. For a couple of seconds, Rosie just watched the sparkles dancing in the air like tiny festive fireflies.
The greenhouse door opened to admit her fiancé, who leapt up the brick steps before stopping dead still as he pointed a large, disbelieving finger at the tiny lights.
âWhat the hell are they?â
âI donât know,â Rosie said, blinking as one particularly insistent sparkle flew a little too close to her face. âWhatever they are, theyâre magic. I can feel their energy.â She reached out, sending the tiny glowing specks gliding away from her hand before glancing at Declan. âI thought magic was supposed to be dwindling, not coasting around like it owns the place?â
Declan looked at the sparkles before meeting Rosieâs gaze. Wordlessly, they both followed the concentration of sparkles into the living room. They seemed to be on steroids out there, zooming across the room toward the couch as though it were a tractor beam, illuminating the shadow of someone sitting with the drapes closed.
Nick was on the couch, frowning in deep thought. He held a bright red tablet, slightly larger than a cell phone, with âJingle Proâ branded across the back of it. A candy-striped device charger zig-zagged over the carpet and into the power outlet across the room. But the most miraculous thing was the way the sparkles in the air seemed to all be drifting toward the tablet, making a pilgrimage to the screen until they disappeared into its shiny, lit-up surface.
Rosie scanned the scene, taking in the distinct buzz of magical energy in the room. âWhat on earth is going on?â
Nick jumped at the sound of Rosieâs voice.
âItâs the list,â he explained, wiggling the shiny red device at them before letting his attention get absorbed by it once again.
Declan blinked, his face scrunched up in confusion. âSantaâs Naughty-or-Nice List is digital? You gotta be kiddinâ me.
